Three Olivet College baseball players selected to 2013 All-MIAA teams
Three Olivet College baseball players have been selected to the 2013 All-MIAA teams. Seniors Andrew Brawley and Randy Young earned first-team honors, while junior Jake Ball was a second-team pick.
OLIVET, Mich. – Three Olivet College baseball players have been selected to the 2013 All-Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) teams. Seniors Andrew Brawley (Niles) and Randy Young (Wixom/Walled Lake Western) earned first-team honors, while junior Jake Ball (Cadillac) was a second-team pick. All-league honors are based on a player's statistics during the 28-game MIAA schedule.
Brawley, a 2012 second-team All-MIAA selection, and Young had nearly identical offensive numbers in league play. Brawley batted .286 to go along with 14 runs scored, 26 hits, three doubles, 34 total bases and 12 RBI. He started 20 games at first base and the other eight games in the outfield, committing only four errors in 177 chances for a .977 fielding percentage.
Young hit .289 with 15 runs, 26 hits, five doubles, 31 total bases and 12 RBI. He started all 28 games at shortstop and had only six miscues in 118 chances for a .949 fielding percentage.
Ball posted a 4-3 record and 2.86 ERA in 44 innings. He struck out 25 and walked only 10 batters. Ball's wins were complete game performances against Calvin College (seven hits); Alma College (three hits, one earned run); Hope College (one hit); and Trine (Ind.) University (nine hits, two earned runs).
For the entire 40-game schedule, Brawley topped the team with a .355 batting average, as well as 49 hits, 27 RBI, .449 slugging percentage and .424 on-base percentage. Defensively, he had only six errors in 269 chances for a .978 fielding percentage.
Young led the team with 30 runs scored, while hitting .333 with 46 hits, eight doubles, 19 RBI. He made only 10 miscues in 184 chances for a .946 fielding percentage.
Ball was first among the starting pitchers with a 3.10 ERA and 5-3 record in 58 total innings. He had 36 strikeouts and walked only 15, with opponents hitting .260 against him.
Under the leadership of seventh-year Head Coach Ted Mahan, the Comets had a 20-20 overall record and were fifth in the MIAA standings with a 13-15 record.
