OLIVET, Mich. – The Olivet College baseball team was swept at home by Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) rival Calvin College, 3-2 and 5-3, today at the Cutler Athletic Complex in Olivet.
In the first game, Olivet scored a run without the benefit of a base hit. Senior Phil Sullens (Belleville) walked to lead off the game and moved to second when senior Braydon LaFramboise (Flushing/Mt. Morris) was hit by a pitch. Both runners advanced one base on a sacrifice bunt by senior Ben Kosmalski (Canton/Plymouth), and Sullens scored on a groundout by junior Tyler Olinske (Negaunee).
The Knights took a 3-1 lead with a three-run fifth inning. The big hit of the inning was a two-run homer by Peter Steiner. The Comets scored once in the sixth and left the tying run stranded on second base. Sullens walked and later scored on a wild pitch.
For the game, Olivet was held to one hit, a single by sophomore Justin Pitt (Imlay City). Senior Brad Beisiegel (Royal Oak) was charged with the loss, as he gave up the three runs on three hit with four strikeouts in seven innings.
In game two, Calvin struck first with two runs in the top half of the first inning. Sophomore Randy Young (Wixom/Walled Lake Western) lined a two-out single up the middle to score two runs in the bottom half of the first. The Knights immediately answered with two runs in the second inning. They added another run in the fourth. The Comets got one run back in the sixth but did not get any closer.
Olivet finished with four hits, all singles by LaFramboise, Young, senior Beau Felix (Hartland) and freshman Joel Peters (Auburn Hills/Avondale). Junior Lee Cline (Mt. Morris) started on the mound and lasted only one and one-third innings to be tagged with the loss. He allowed four runs (three earned) on one hit, as three of the five batters he walked came around to score. Freshman Jake Ball (Cadillac) pitched the rest of the game in relief, and surrendered one earned run on six hits.
The Comets (7-18, 5-11 MIAA) will travel to play a nine-inning, non-conference game next Wednesday, April 27, starting at 2 p.m.
