Baseball team beats Wheaton, 10-6, for first win of 2011 season
The baseball team defeated Wheaton (Ill.) College, 10-6, this evening under the lights at the Gene Cusic Classic and inside Terry Park in Fort Myers, Fla.
FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Olivet College baseball team defeated Wheaton (Ill.) College, 10-6, this evening under the lights at the Gene Cusic Classic and inside Terry Park in Fort Myers, Fla.
Olivet pushed across three unearned runs in the third inning. After Wheaton made the score 3-1 with a run in the fourth, the Comets scored four runs in the fifth and three runs in the sixth to take a 10-1 lead. The Thunder rallied with two runs in the bottom half of the sixth and three runs in the eighth to cut their deficit down to 10-6, but could not get any closer.
Senior Phil Sullens (Belleville) had two of Olivet's seven hits. Senior Beau Felix (Hartland) drove in two runs, while sophomore Randy Young (Wixom/Walled Lake Western) scored three runs.
On the mound, sophomore Jay Magro (Bridgman) picked-up his first win of the season, throwing six innings and allowing one earned one run on seven hits. He struck out six and walked two batters. In relief, senior Braydon LaFramboise (Flushing/Mt. Morris) pitched one and one-third scoreless innings.
The Comets are back in action tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. against Dominican (Ill.) University.
