Baseball team splits doubleheader at Calvin, lose game one (7-5) and win game two (8-2)
For the second straight day, the Olivet College baseball team has split a doubleheader with Calvin College. In today’s games at the Calvin Field in Grand Rapids, Calvin won game 7-5 before the Comets bounced back to win the second game, 8-2.

Game 1
In the first game, the Knights scored three times in the first inning and once in the second inning to take a 4-0 lead. Olivet pushed across a pair of runs in the third to cut its deficit in half, 4-2. After Calvin scored a run in the bottom half of the third, the Comets plated two runs in the fourth and one run in the fifth to level the score at 5-5. The Knights scored the go-ahead runs in their half of the fifth. In the seventh, the first two Olivet batters reached base safely, but three straight outs ended their scoring chance.
For the game, the Comets outhit Calvin, 10-7. Junior Beau Felix (Hartland) and freshman Randy Young (Wixom/Walled Lake Western) each had a pair of hits. Five different players collected one RBI apiece. On the mound, senior Josh Norlock threw the first three innings, but did not factor in the decision. He gave up five runs (two earned) on four hits. Freshman Devon Doxey (Climax/Climax-Scotts) was tagged the with the loss, as he tossed one and one-third innings, allowing a pair of runs on one hit, one walk and one hit batter.
In the second game, the Knights took a 2-0 lead with single tallies in the first and second innings. Olivet grabbed a 4-2 lead with a four-run fourth inning. In the frame, senior Erik McCloud (Holly) hit a two-run home run and sophomore Jacob Blamer (Newaygo) ripped a two-run double. The Comets added to their lead with three runs in the sixth. The big hit of the inning was a two-RBI single by Doxey. Olivet closed the scoring with a run in the seventh.
The Comets finished the game with just four hits, however, three of hits combined to drive in six runs. McCloud was 1-for-2 with two RBI and two runs scored. Sophomore Aaron Campbell (Lansing/Waverly) started the game on the mound and threw three and two-third innings. He allowed a pair of runs on seven hits. McCloud pitched three and one-third innings of scoreless relief to earn the win.
Olivet will play Alma College in its next four-game Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association four-game series. The teams will play a doubleheader at Olivet's Cutler Athletic Complex Thursday afternoon, beginning at 2 p.m., before playing two games at Alma's Klenk Park next Saturday, starting at 1 p.m.
