Baseball Team Defeats Defiance (Ohio) College, 6-0
The Olivet College baseball team won its eighth straight game today as the Fighting Comets defeated non-conference foe Defiance (Ohio) College, 6-0.
OLIVET, Mich. -- The Olivet College baseball team won its eighth straight game today as the Fighting Comets defeated non-conference foe Defiance (Ohio) College, 6-0.
On the mound, junior lefthander William Lawrence (Hamilton, Canada/Bishop Ryan) tossed a complete game six-hitter. He walked one batter and struck out nine.
"Billy threw the ball well and gave us a solid nine innings of work," said Head Coach Carlton Hardy. "He was able to gain his composure and find the strike zone after working out of a bases loaded jam in the first inning.
The Comets (14-12) jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the fourth inning. Olivet added another run in both the fifth and sixth before putting the game away with two more runs in the seventh.
At the plate, both junior centerfielder Beau Locker (Coldwater Union City High School) and sophomore right fielder Matthew Hurley (Sault Ste. Marie, Canada/White Plains) had a pair of hits, scored a run and drove in a run. Junior second baseman Joe Richards (Galesburg Augusta High School) and freshman third baseman Stan Cieslak (Troy Avondale High School) had a RBI a piece.
Olivet will travel to play Kalamazoo College in a three-game Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association series this Friday-Saturday, April 25 and 26. Friday's single game will start at 4 p.m., and the doubleheader will start on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
