Baseball Team Falls to Adrian College, 9-1, in its MIAA Opener
The Olivet College baseball team fell to Adrian College, 9-1, today in its Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association opener. The game was officially called after five innings because of rain and darkness. The Fighting Comets are scheduled to host the Bulldogs in a MIAA doubleheader tomorrow, March 29, at 1 p.m.
OLIVET, Mich. -- The Olivet College baseball team fell to Adrian College, 9-1, today in its Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association opener. The game was officially called after five innings because of rain and darkness. The Fighting Comets are scheduled to host the Bulldogs in a MIAA doubleheader tomorrow, March 29, at 1 p.m.
Olivet (5-9, 0-1 MIAA) scored its run in the second inning. Senior Steve Held (Brampton, Ontario/Saint Augustine) hit a single to left center to start the inning. Senior James Virden (Branch/Mason County Central High School) reached base on an error, moving Held to second base. Sophomore Matthew Hurley (Sault Ste. Marie, Canada/White Plains) moved both runners over a base on a sacrifice bunt. Junior Joe Richards (Galesburg/Augusta High School) then had a base hit, scoring Virden from third base.
Junior Richard Strain (Livonia Churchill High School) and freshman Stan Cieslak (Troy Avondale High School) had the other hits for the Comets. On the mound, junior D.J. Celetti (Saulte Ste. Marie, Canada/Notre Dame) picked up the loss after pitching two innings. He allowed four hits and four earned runs. Senior Thomas Stowe (Middlefield, Ohio/Cardinal High School) pitched three innings of relief work, allowing five earned runs on four base hits.
Following tomorrow's doubleheader, Olivet will next play on Tuesday, April 1, when it plays a single game at Tri-State University in Angola, Indiana.
